Welcome to Color Theory Made Simple

Welcome to the video lessons for Color Theory Made Simple. These lessons are here to help you see color theory in action and explore the concepts from the book in a simple, practical, and visual way. In this introductory video, I'll explain what you'll learn and what this book is all about. I'm so happy you're here. Let's begin!

Chapter 1

The Color Circle

Learn how the Color Circle is built and why it is one of the most useful tools for understanding color relationships and mixing.

Lesson locked

This video is included with the digital book.

About this lesson
This chapter introduces the traditional RYB Color Circle, Primary, secondary and tertiary colors, and the idea that different pigments can produce different color circles. The goal is to make the wheel a practical map for predicting color relationships rather than a diagram to memorize.
Practice
Put the Color Circle into practice by creating your own. I've prepared a printable template with the circle already divided into sections, so you can focus on mixing and placing your colors without having to draw the wheel yourself.
Chapter 3 Intro

Hue, Value and Chroma

Learn to see color beyond its name by understanding the three essential characteristics that define it: hue, value, and chroma.

Lesson locked

This video is included with the digital book.

About this lesson
Every color can be understood through three main characteristics: hue, value, and chroma. In this chapter, you'll learn how to recognize what makes a color appear lighter or darker, more vibrant or more muted, and how its identity can shift when colors are mixed. Understanding these three elements will give you a clearer way to observe, compare and control color in your paintings.
Practice
Put what you've learned into practice with a dedicated exercise for each color quality. Explore hue, value, and chroma step by step by mixing, comparing and observing how each characteristic changes.
Chapter 3.1

Hue (Color Family)

Understand Hue as the identity of a color and learn how it gradually changes as one color family shifts into another.

Lesson locked

This video is included with the digital book.

About this lesson
Hue answers a simple question: “Which color is it?” In this chapter, we'll explore how to recognize different color families, understand neighboring and opposite hues and observe the different ways a hue can shift when colors are mixed together.
Practice
Put what you've learned into practice with the printable hue exercise on page 24. Start with two neighboring colors, mix a midpoint between them, then create intermediate mixtures to observe the gradual shift from one hue to the other.
Chapter 3.2

Value

Learn to see Value and understand how light and dark relationships create structure, depth and believable form.

Lesson locked

This video is included with the digital book.

About this lesson
Value describes how light or dark a color appears. In this chapter, you'll learn why value relationships are often more important than choosing the exact hue and how differences in value can help separate shapes, create depth and bring structure to a painting.
Practice
Put what you've learned into practice with the printable value exercise on page 27. Create a controlled progression from lighter to darker values and observe how the same hue changes across the scale.
Chapter 3.3

Chroma

Learn how chroma controls the intensity of a color and how variations in saturation can direct attention, create mood and build depth.

Lesson locked

This video is included with the digital book.

About this lesson
Chroma describes how vibrant or muted a color appears. In this chapter, you'll explore how higher-chroma colors can attract attention, while lower-chroma colors can create softer, quieter and more atmospheric areas within a painting.
Practice
Put what you've learned into practice with the printable chroma exercise on page 31. Gradually reduce the intensity of a chosen color and observe how the mixtures become increasingly muted across the scale.
Chapter 4

Warm & Cool Colors

Explore color temperature and discover how warm and cool relationships can influence depth, mood and the way colors interact when mixed.

Lesson locked

This video is included with the digital book.

About this lesson
Warm and cool are relative, not fixed labels. In this chapter, you'll learn how colors can lean warmer or cooler within the same color family, how color direction affects your mixtures and how temperature works alongside value and chroma to shape a painting.
Practice
Put what you've learned into practice with the printable color-direction exercise on page 36. Compare mixtures made with colors that lean in different directions and observe how changing the temperature of your colors affects the final result.
